Focal Award 2020 for Best Restoration Project

This year’s prestigious FOCAL Award for the Best Archive Restoration and Preservation Title was assigned to the restored version of La roue (Abel Gance, 1923), commissioned by Fondation Jérôme Seydoux-Pathé and carried out at L’Immagine Ritrovata (Bologna) and L’Image Retrouvée (Paris).

La Roue is one of the most legendary silent movie but no version of the initial 1923 version has ever been seen again.

The biggest challenge of this restoration was to rebuild the version through the various different elements available. François Ede, film historian, was in charge of the reconstruction by Fondation Jérôme Seydoux-Pathé.

The objective of this restoration was not only to reconstruct as faithfully as possible a mutilated and invisible film, but also had the ambition to restore an exceptional cinematographic show, with orchestra accompaniment close to what the spectators of the Gaumont-Palace discovered in early 1923.
