During the Classic Film Festival, which began on October 24 and is still underway in Suzhou, the Classic Film Restoration Symposium Reviving Cultural Memory Through Classic Cinema took place.

Our Director, Davide Pozzi, participated in the conference with a talk on the importance of ethics and the human element in digital restoration processes.

Thanks to digital technology, it is possible to achieve almost any effect, even making the image better than it originally was. But the central task of a good restorer is knowing when to stop. For this reason, we use only about a tenth of the functions in some color correction software, with a much more restrained level of intervention compared to contemporary colorists. We could achieve tones more in line with modern aesthetics, but as restorers our mission is to respect the work and restore its original value.

Organizer: China Film Archive (China Film Art Research Center)
